Wham! Biography

Pop duo Wham! was formed in 1981 by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley in England. The two met while attending Bushey Meads School and started performing in a ska-inspired rock band named “The Executive.” After the group disbanded, Michael and Ridgeley joined forces to form Wham! and soon landed a recording contract. Their debut effort, the double A-side “Wham Rap!” was released in 1982. Their follow-up single “Young Guns (Go For It)” in the same year lingered for a while outside the UK Top 40. An appearance at Top Of The Pops, however, catapulted the song to number 24 and eventually reaching as high as number 3. Thanks to that performance, Wham! soon found themselves as one of the biggest pop acts in Britain. “Fantastic,” the duo’s first full-length album in 1983 peaked at the top spot in the album charts. After two more successful studio albums, Wham! decided to disband in 1986.
